Canadian Literature

In addition to my role at Canadian Literature as the marketing & communications coordinator, I had the opportunity to polish my graphic design skills in Illustrator and Photoshop and layout in InDesign.
As part of the journal’s change management, I lead the journal in updating its interior design and cover. Under the direction of our editor-in-chief, we simplified and standardized the font, sizing, and spacing for each issue.
Since our long-time designer had retired, we were on the hunt for a new designer. It turned out we were in need of an updated template for our journal as well. Working with an Arts Amplifier student, we created a new template with updated paragraph styles and parent pages. You can see the updated style in issue #248.
Since then, the new designer has taken the cover and some of the interior elements in a different direction but still uses the general rebranding design.

To the right is the update logo image for CanLit, the three dandelion seeds that represent the influence of thought and ideas spreading throughout the world, that I designed in early 2022. The dandelions were retired in 2023.

Cover art for CanLit issue 249
In 2021, working with guest editors Candida Rifkind and Zachary J. A. Rondinelli, I designed the cover for a special issue of “Pasts, Presents, and Futures of Canadian Comics.” The editors wanted something that was a little gritty and imitated the feel and look of well-read comic books. The wear and tear around the corners, the creases, and the grim are all part of the image!

The BC Forest Discovery Centre
Through the UBC Arts Amplifier, I joined a cohort to work collaboratively with the BC Forest Discovery Centre.
Our cohort was tasked with updating their school-aged materials. We started off doing an environmental scan across the industry to discover what other companies were creating. Alongside this, we updated materials according to the BC curriculum.
I took on the task of updating and creating graphics for the packages. Below are a few samples of the content I created!
